History

A century ago when 12th Street was Sherman Street and 43rd Avenue was called Harris Avenue, Duplex Motion Picture Industries invested in this Block and constructed this strong Concrete + Brick building in 1920.
Despite the fact that their industries occupied the building for only a decade, the contribution their inventions made to the film industry had a lasting impact on Long Island City. We’d like to re-introduce you to a piece of the building history and re-build the creative energy of this block that inspired this building to be construction in the first place.
Whether you are an established business in Long Island City community looking to expand into more space, or a start-up with an idea to scale and need some space to make it happen, let’s work out a deal. We want to provide to the opportunity to cultivate a creative use for this manufacturing building and re-activate the narrative.
Better known to the Long Island City skyline, while crossing the Queensboro bridge, the building is famous for its large letter presence of Steinway Storage made by Mack Sign Co. that has clad the front façade for more than half a century.
Originally the building was not only used for Motion Picture equipment, but also Metal Fabrication, Wood Cabinetry, Mechanical Duct Systems, Experimental Work, Modeling & Development for the Film Industry. It also used to be home to Duplex restaurant.
